184 killed in Eid-ul-fitr homecoming rush in Indonesia: police

JAKARTA: Almost 200 people died on Indonesia’s roads this week as almost 30 million people headed home to celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr, police said Saturday.

Over 27 million people are expected to be on the move as cities and towns emptied in this year’s exodus marking the completion of the fasting month of Ramadan in the world’s most populous Muslim nation.

‘184 people have been killed on the roads in the past six days from 466 road accidents,’ national police spokesman Nanan Soekarna said. Around 650 people were injured, he added.

‘We urge travellers to truly maintain safety on the road,’ Soekarna said.

At least 548 people were killed, most of them packed onto motorcycles, on Indonesian roads during last year’s exodus.

Indonesians will celebrate the Eid holiday on either Sunday or Monday, depending on the sighting of the new moon. —AFP
