Destruction of Holy sites in Syria:Pakistan summoned Syrian envoy

23 Jul

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan on Monday summoned a senior Syrian diplomat to strongly condemn what it called the ‘deliberate and wanton’ attacks on holy sites in Syria including recent attacks on Sayyeda Bibi Zainab’s shrine in Damascus. The foreign ministry conveyed Pakistan’s deep concerns over such ‘reprehensible acts.’According to the foreign ministry spokesperson, the government of Pakistan urged upon Syrian authorities to ensure safety and security of all holy shrines and buildings in Syria.

“The trend of desecration of the holy sites has hurt the sentiments of Muslims in Pakistan as indeed the world over. Such violations, which also fan sectarian strife, are most reprehensible,” the spokesperson added. Pakistan also called upon all parties involved in the Syrian conflict to observe the international humanitarian law and help protect the common heritage of mankind respecting the sanctity of the holy buildings and places of worship.

Islamabad summoned the Syrian envoy a day after countrywide protests against the desecration of holy sites.

Protesters also staged a sit-in outside the foreign office on Sunday, urging the government to denounce the attacks and take up the matter with concerned authorities.

On Monday, reports emerged that the mosque where Khalid Bin Walid, a companion of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) and commander of Muslim forces known for his military prowess and conquests, had been buried in Syria, had been damaged by military shelling.

Day of Ashura – An Islamic perspective

Day of Ashura – An Islamic perspective
By Shoaib Shaikh

Muslims follow the lunar calendar. All auspicious occasions, festivals, historic events, etc all goes in accordance with the lunar calendar.

Muharram is the first month of the Islamic calendar. Many Muslims are ignorant about this. It is a pity that we are less bothered about our religion. An event crops on my mind. I happened to watch a popular reality game show called Kaun Banega Carorpati. Film star Shahrukh khan was a guest at the show. In the due course of the game the Superstar was posed a question – which is the first month of the Islamic lunar calendar? Surprisingly he could manage to answer only with the help of a life line. This is the sorry state of so called famous Muslim personality and many muslims. Now let’s cut to the chase and discuss the importance of this month.

The 10th day of this month is of an immense importance. The day is called as Ashura. Prophet (pbuh) used to increase the performance of good deeds during this day. He used to fast on the day of Ashura. Below are few traditions which mark the importance of the day.

Hakam ibn Al-Arat (Radiyallahu ‘anh) relates: I went to Ibn Abbas (Radiyallahu ‘anh)… I said to him: Tell me about fasting on ‘Ashura. He said, “When you seen the new moon of Muharram count the (days) and (begin to) observe fast on the 9th.” I said to him: “Is it how the Holy Messenger of Allah PBUH observed the fast?” He said, “Yes.” [Sahih Muslim]

Mu’awiyah ibn Abu Sufyan (Radiyallahu ‘anh) relates: I heard the Prophet PBUH saying: “It is the day of ‘Ashura. Allah SWT has not made fasting obligatory for you. But I am fasting. He who likes to observe fast among you should do so, and he who likes not to observe it (does not have to) observe it.” [Sahih Muslim]. It becomes very clear that fasting on this day is not obligatory.

Another wonderful benefit of fasting on this day is it wipes out the sins (minor ones) of the preceding year as said: Abu Qatada (Radiyallahu ‘anh) relates that the Holy Prophet PBUH said that the fast on the 10th of Muharram atones for the sins of the preceding year. [Sahih Muslim]

Why we shall fast on the day of Ashura? The reason is explained very clearly in this tradition of Prophet as Ibn Abbas (Radiyallahu ‘anh) reports that the Holy Prophet PBUH arrived in Madinah and found the Jews observing fast on the day of ‘Ashura… They said: “It is the day of great (significance) when Allah bestowed mercy on Prophet Musa and his followers and drowned tyrant Pharoah and his people, and Musa AS observed fast out of gratitude. And we also observe it.” The Holy Messenger of Allah PBUH responded: “We have more right, and we have closer connection with Musa AS than you have”; so Allah’s Messenger PBUH observed fast (on the day of ‘Ashura) and gave us orders to observe it. [Sahih Bukhari and Muslim]

Ibn Abbas (Radiyallahu ‘anh) relates that when the Holy Prophet PBUH said: “If I survive till next year, I will definitely observe fast on the 9th of Muharram (as well).” [Sahih Muslim]. One important thing that needs to be analyzed here is all the traditions that come on this context are reported in either Bukhari or Muslim both of which are regarded as most authentic books on Hadith. From the above traditions we can understand that fasting on 9th as well as 10th is the best act.

Now let us look into the history of the day of Ashura. Ashura is a day of great historical significance. On this day: Allah SWT accepted the repentance of Prophet Adam AS after his exile from Paradise; Allah SWT saved Prophet Nuh AS and his companions in the ark; Allah SWT extinguished the fire in which Prophet Ibrahim AS was thrown by tyrant ruler Nimrod; And Allah SWT spoke directly to Prophet Musa AS and gave him the Commandments. On this same 10th of Muharram, Prophet Ayyub AS was restored to health (from the ailment of leprosy); Prophet Yusuf AS was reunited with his Prophet father Ya’qub AS, Prophet Yunus AS was taken out from the belly of the fish; and the sea was divided as the nation of Israel was freed from captivity and Pharoah’s army was destroyed. ‘Ashura is also the day when Prophet Dawud AS was forgiven; the kingdom of Sulaiman AS was restored; Prophet Isa AS was raised to Jannah and Husayn (Radiyallahu ‘anh) (the Holy Prophet’s PBUH grandson) achieved the honor of Martyrdom.

O’ Allah! Bless us to perform good deeds and gain the maximum out of it. O’ Allah! Make this New Year a year of happiness; help us remain steadfast, mutual cooperation, blessing, success of both worlds for Muslims in every nook and corner of the world. Aameen

Bareilly sharif Riot an Interview with Maulana Tauqeer Raza Khan

23 Mar

Mumtaz Alam Falahi for

New Delhi: Eminent cleric Maulana Tauqeer Raza Khan, in a telephonic talk with from Bareilly today, accused the then DM and DIG for the communal riots in the UP town on March 2 that continued about 10 days resulting in heavy losses of properties of Muslims. Khan, who was arrested for his alleged role in the violence but later given clean chit, said the top police officers were of communal mind and had connived with sitting BJP MLA for the riots.

The riot broke out on March 2 during Eid Milad procession. The violence spread to entire town resulting in the large scale losses of properties. The town was under curfew for 15 days. Maulana Tauqeer Raza Khan was arrested on March 8 but after an enquiry gave him a clean chit he was released by the court.

Maulana Tauqeer Raza Khan

Why police arrested you in connection with communal violence in Bareilly?

The DM was communal minded. He wanted to burn the city in communal fire. DIG was also of this mind. Riots broke because of the irresponsible attitude and communal mindset of these officers. The issue was very small and violence started at a small scale. If they had acted responsibly it could have been controlled in hours. But they did not act promptly and the violence engulfed the entire town. The incident took place on March 2. I was arrested on March 8 even when there was no FIR, no complaint and no case against me.

My mistake was that when DGP and Home Secretary visited the violence-hit town I told them the truth about the violence, how it started and spread and who is responsible for it. This antagonized the DM and DIG. They had presented representatives of small organizations before the DGP and Home Secretary. As they were already tutored by the local police officers they did not utter a word against the DM and DIG. I was the only one who spoke truth about the biased role of the DM and DIG. I told these two gave full freedom to rioters. In fact they connived with the rioters. This antagonized them. Later they called me to office and arrested me. First they arrested me, then filed FIR and slapped different sections of IPC against me.

How did the violence start and what are the losses of properties?

It was a big riot. Huge losses of properties were caused. But thankfully, there was no casualty. Local people both Hindu and Muslim are peaceful and that’s why though communalists succeeded in spreading hatred that caused destruction of properties but there was no loss of human life.

In Muslim localities there was large scale destruction. PAC personnel entered Muslim houses and looted. After that there has been arrests at large scale.

Was there political involvement behind the violence?

Yes, it was a politically motivated violence. The DM and the sitting BJP MLA conspired for the riots. For the last 20-25 years BJP has ruled Bareilly as its MP would get elected from here. It was first time in the last Lok Sabha election in 2009 when the party candidate lost and I had played a big role in it. It was the first time that the Eid Milad procession was being taken out when there was a non-BJP MP, and that’s why they planned for the communal riots.

There is no case against me. After my arrest, an enquiry was set up and I was given clean chit. All charges against me fell flat. I had no role in violence. Rather I was actively working for peace and to check the violence. The DM implicated me just in hatred and revenge.

I demand that innocents arrested in connection with the violence are released immediately and the real culprits are brought to book.

THE Qul for martyred religious scholar Dr Sarfraz Naeemi was held at Jamia Naeemia on Sunday

15 Jun

Federal Religious Affairs Minister Hamid Saeed Kazmi, MNA Sahibzada Fazal Karim, Mufti Munib ur Rehman, a large number of political workers and people participated in the Qul held amid tight security.

Later, a convention was also held at the seminary and participants condemned the tragic killing of Allama Naeemi and paid tribute to the Shaheed for his remarkable services for country and religion.

The religious affairs minister said the government would defeat terrorists and the miscreants wouldn’t succeed in their nefarious designs. He said the tragic killing of Allama Naeemi was a highly condemnable incident. He said terrorists had the agenda to spread hatred in the country and government would wipe them out.

Meanwhile, senior Political Assistant to Chief Minister and former MNA Pervez Malik said Dr. Sarfraz Naeemi was a national asset and every person was mourning his tragic death.

He said those involved in suicidal bomb blasts were cowards and enemies of the humanity and were not Muslims in any way, as they were attacking mosques and religious seminaries. He said the involvement of foreign hands could not be ruled out in these attacks and mastermind of series of suicidal attacks would soon be exposed. He said Dr. Sarfraz Naeemi was upholder of peace and he rendered remarkable services for the glory of Islam, promotion of equality and national reconciliation. He said Mufti Naeemi was martyred to spread riots and sectarianism in the country, therefore, the people should not be impatient and try to foil ulterior motives of the anti-Islam forces.

Pervez Malik said Dr. Sarfraz Naeemi always preached unity and harmony among the people and challenged the infidel forces for the sake of right and noble deeds. He said the terrorists had no religion and thought and they were enemies of the whole nation while Dr. Naeemi accepted martyrdom for achieving this purpose and he did not withdraw from principle against extremism. He had visited the four provinces to unite the people against terrorism, saying the people of Pakistan could not be harassed through militancy. He always stressed the need for unity among Muslims which was praiseworthy.

Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) stand up against Taliban

10 May

Islamabad, May 9 (IANS) The Pakistani government has received an unexpected boost in its struggle against militancy with eight parties of the Barelvi school of thought coming together under the umbrella of the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) to fight the growing Talibanisation in the country.

“The alliance has demanded the Pakistan Army speed up its operation to eliminate the Taliban from the NWFP (North West Frontier Province) and FATA (Federally Administered Tribal Areas) and appealed to the nation to get united against the menace,” The News reported Saturday.

Speaking to reporters at the Lahore Press Club Friday, leaders of the SIC component parties announced the launching of a “Save Pakistan Movement” across the country to stem the menace of Talibanisation.

Terming the Taliban a product of global anti-Islam conspiracies, they charged it with playing into the hands of the US to divide Muslims and bring a bad name to Islam.

Charging the Taliban with belonging to the same school of thought that opposed the creation of Pakistan, they charged the militants with destroying 10 shrines of holy saints in the NWFP besides killing hundreds of Sunni leaders.

The SIC leaders said Sunni muftis would soon issue fatwas against the anti-Islamic practices of the Taliban, and asked the nation to publicly disown the militants.

The Aalmi Tanzim Ahle Sunnat, the Jamiat Ulema-e-Pakistan, The Markazi Jamaat Ahle Sunnat, the Sunni Tehrik, the Karawan-e-Islam, the Markazi Jamiat Ulema-e-Pakistan, the Nizam-e-Mustafa Party and the Jamaat Ahle Sunnat make up the SIC.

Lahore, May 9 (PTI) Pakistani religious parties of the Barelvi school of thought today forged an alliance to check extremist elements spreading Talibanisation in parts of the country, especially the politically strategic Punjab province, and backed the military operations against militants.
The parties Sunni Tehrik, Jamiat Ulema-e-Pakistan, Aalmi Tanzim Ahle Sunnat, Markazi Jamaat Ahle Sunnat, Karwan-e-Islam and Nizam-e-Mustafa have joined hands under the banner of the Sunni Itehad Counsil (SIC).

The leaders of these parties told a news conference here that the Taliban’s brand of Islam had landed other religious parties in hot waters as “the people have started equating us with Taliban”.

“To dispel this impression and Taliban’s version of Islam, we are going to hold an all Pakistan Ulema and Mashaikh conference in Islamabad on May 17. We strongly condemn Taliban and urge the Pakistan military to eliminate them at the earliest,” they said in a statement.

The parties said they were monitoring elements in their seminaries that are reportedly targeting young students to achieve their nefarious designs.

There are intelligence reports that Taliban have focused on seminaries, including those in Punjab, to recruit youths. PTI

ST’s political wing wants Pakistan to be declared Sunni state

17 Apr

The News
By By Shamim Bano  Karachi

Pakistan Inquilabi Tehreek (Pakistan Revolutionary Movement), the political front of the Sunni Tehrik (ST), has emerged on the political horizon of the country with the aim to change the future of Pakistan by implementing Nizam-e-Mustafa “through radical polices and not by force.”

“Pakistan is a Sunni state and the laws of the Sunni sect should be implemented in the country as per the Constitution,” ST Central Coordination Committee Member Shakeel Qadri told The News. The Pakistan Inquilabi Tehreek (PIT) was formed with ST chief Sarwat Ejaz Qadri as its “lifetime chairman,” while other office-bearers will either be nominated by its chairman or through a vote count.

The formal announcement regarding the PIT was made by Sarwat Ejaz Qadri at the Jaan Nisaran-e-Mustafa Conference. This new “political force” has been formed as a parallel to the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), said media coordinator Faheemuddin Shaikh. The PIT will have its offices across the country, including Azad Kashmir, he said.

The idea of the PIT was not new because it was also discussed with slain ST chief Abbas Qadri and even with leaders who were eliminated two years ago in the Nishtar Park bomb blast, he said.

The leaders who survived the bombing held marathon meetings with the party members across the country and a committee was formed to “visualize the ground reality.” After hectic consultations it was decided that the ST’s political wing, the PIT, will be formed to take up the issues confronting the party.

“The first and foremost objective of the party is the implementation of Nizam-e-Mustafa in its true spirit, followed by the formation of a welfare state and ensuring protection to minorities,” Shaikh said, adding that Christians and Hindus, as well as all other religious sects having a small number of followers also fall in the ambit of minority.

Since Eid Milad-un-Nabi is celebrated throughout the county with religious fervour, it implies that Pakistan happens to be a Sunni Barelvi state and not Deoband, because Deobandis do not believe in celebrating Eid Milad-un-Nabi, Shaikh claimed.

The existing political forces in the country cannot resolve the issues of the people, in the way the PIT can, he maintained. The PIT flag will have a green background, with red depicting an Islamic revolution. The party will try to enforce Nizam-e-Mustafa through the parliament and not by force as in Swat. “The PIT believes in democracy and through its teaching and training the party will draw the youth of the country towards Islam, as it is the only religion which gives the right path and direction of life,” he said.

The party will be headquartered in Karachi, and will have divisional offices in all major cities of the country. “It will, however, be premature to say whether ST offices will accommodate PIT or whether it will have separate offices,” Qadri said. He said they will certainly take part in the next general elections and hoped that they will win seats in Karachi and other cities of the country. “The Jaan Nisaran-e-Mustafa Conference was a trailer that proved our majority,” he added.

Another Sunni Leader is gunned down in Pakistan

21 Feb

QUETTA: Unidentified men killed Jamaat Ahl-e-Sunnat Wal Jamaat-Noorani provincial leader Maulana Iftikhar Ahmed Habibi in Quetta on Wednesday, sparking a wave of protests.

Police said Habibi, who was also a regular Islamic commentator on the Pakistan Television (PTV), was killed by unidentified men when he was on his way to work. Habibi was driving to the PTV Quetta station when the men opened fire, killing him instantly.

His relatives took the body to the Governor’s House to protest. The protesters chanted slogans against the police and demanded the arrest of the culprits. The police resorted to aerial firing in order to disperse them and took around 14 protesters into custody.

No group has claimed responsibility for the murder.

“This is an act of sectarianism carried out by those who had previously threatened to kill Habibi,” Mir Abdul Qudoos Sasooli, the provincial president of the Jamiat Ulema-e-Pakistan (JUP), said. “The murder was carried out by the activists of banned organisations which are operating now under new names,” he said, giving the Balochistan government a 72-hour ultimatum to arrest the murderers.

The JUP will observe a Balochistan-wide strike on Thursday (today) to protest against the murder. Sasooli appealed to traders and the people to observe a shutter-down strike as a protest against Habibi’s assassination and express their solidarity with the JUP in Balochistan.

He said the JUP would contact the Anjuman-e-Tajiran Balochistan to ensure the strike was a success, APP reported. Habibi was a regular commentator of Balochi and Brahvi languages on PTV. His friends said the slain leader had been threatened in the past but the police had not provided him any security.
