Saudi Arabia and its Unholy nexus with Zionist Israel and U.S

One of the most memorable events in the friendship was the exchange of gifts between US President Franklin Roosevelt and Saudi King Abdul Aziz. The president gave the king a Dakota aero plane and the latter handed the US a maintenance contract for T.W.A. This was the beginning of Saudia. (Arab News, 20 September 2002).

One thing could be said for sure that the most important Muslim country in the world has collaborated and are aligned with Antichrist imperialist forces headed by the US. It is a direct or indirect surrender to one of the worst enemies of Islam, Muslims and mankind in general. The world knows that the terrorist state of America is ravaging Afghanistan, Iraq and by proxy Palestine. It is invading Muslim lands, enslaving civilians, maiming innocent people, killing youngsters, starving infants, destroying civilization, bombing hospitals, schools, and marriage parties on daily basis. Its enmity with Islam is not a secret, but a declared government policy. Ignoring all, the Saudi rulers even today express solidarity to and maintain a ‘historical’ friendship with America. They use phrases like ‘most loyal ally’, ‘strategical partner’, ‘a privileged and most dependable friend’, ‘oldest friend’, ‘a time tested friend’, etc. to describe America. On the other hand general public opinion is outrageous over this meek and submissive gesture of Saudi rulers. Ignoring all these, the Saudi rulers continue to overlook interest of Islam and the Muslims in favor of their own selfish interests.

‘Americanism’ is apparent everywhere in Saudi society. It must be reminded here that the US is a creator, protector and torchbearer of the Zionist state Israel. American civilization is a Jewish (Antichrist) civilization by its nature and origin. Founder of the Saudi kingdom, King Abdul Aziz established friendship with America. His descendants are stuck to that foreign policy till date. As the Prophet’s saying goes ‘ Annaaso Ala Deen e Mulukihim’; (people’s lifestyle, thoughts and etiquettes etc. are that of their rulers), we can notice that the ruling elite and a large chunk of upper class is running after everything that comes from America. Be it politics, trade, education, tourism, medicine, fashion, foods etc., and the Saudi society looks towards America. Even today America provides them with all kinds of luxuries and in lieu of these America gets big business contracts. Here it must also be kept in mind that America not only provides with instruments of debauchery but advertise rather promulgate American culture too.

In fact, Saudi rulers are responsible for present state of affairs. Don’t they know that America and Israel are two sides to the same coin? Isn’t it a fact that the existence of Israel in the heart of Arab peninsula is the greatest tragedy and the biggest defeat of the twentieth century Muslim Ummah? In spite of these facts the Arab rulers and the so called custodian of two holiest mosques preferred to remain a natural ally of the oppressor and imperialist forces. In past, they conspired against the Ottoman Caliphate and collaborated with the Americans and the British to disintegrate the Caliphate and get small territories to establish Sheikhdom in place of Caliphate. They succeeded in their nefarious design. This is not a debatable issue. This is the plain truth beyond any doubt. In fact, the disintegration of the Ottoman Empire paved the way for the establishment of an illegal and illegitimate Israel on the occupied Arab land. At a time when multi-dimensional conspiracies against Ottoman Empire were in full swing to establish an illegal Israel in the heart of Arabian Peninsula their only concerns were throne and Sheikhdom. Israel was not born out of an accident but, it was the result of well-planned and well-calculated move of western powers. Now the US is the biggest protector of Zionist interests and the mentally westernized Arab rulers are safeguarding its interests directly and indirectly.

American policy makers and the Zionist think-tanks knew it well that in the Gulf region American and Zionist interests are not safe until the ruling elite and populace are mentally westernized and physically “paralyzed”. They dexterously played their game and now on international affairs, Arab rulers are mere pawns in the hands of America which sacrifices them at its will to safeguard its larger interests. Walking in the footsteps of their rulers, a large section of Arab population too is westernized inwardly as well as outwardly. Though I am talking explicitly about Saudi society, the situation is more or less the same in the entire Gulf region.

Even today, contracts to discover or newly discovered oil fields are given to American companies on preferential basis. It won’t be an exaggeration if we say that the U.S. takes the petroleum from Arab nations at nominal prices. The crude oil, which sells for 60-70 dollar a barrel in international market, America buys it for two dollars a barrel from Saudi Arabia. Different newspapers reports, based on financial experts’ opinion, indicate that the royal family’s eight trillion dollars are lying in American banks and financial institutions which are promoting interest system of banking all over the world. And it is a known fact that most of American and European Banks are owned by Jews and Zionists. The book ‘Big Oil & Their Bankers In Persian Gulf’ by Dean Henderson is an eye opener on this subject.

It is an open secret that money deposited in World Bank and IMF etc. is utilized by imperialists to enslave suffering people of the Third World countries by giving them aids at high interest rates with certain conditions such as mortgaging their sovereignty in the hands of American capitalist administration to get the so-called financial assistance. Jews and Neo-con capitalists take the maximum benefit of it.

Saudi Arabia is the biggest buyer of the American weapons. These weapons are given on the condition that they will not be used against American ally i.e. Israel. This is also a fact that US tends to sell these weapons but not the technology and so Saudi Arabia has a large numbers of F-15 and F-16 fighter jets but these planes are only operated by American pilots, besides it also extracts large sums of money from Saudi Arabia and other Gulf states in the name of maintaining and updating those outdated weapons on regular basis.

Most suitable destination of investment for Saudi capitalists is America, where in banks and hotels they invest enormous amount of money. America’s largest bank City Financial Corporation’s 40% shares are owned by a Saudi prince who is nephew of King Fahad. Every year affluent Saudis spend 15 billion dollars on tourism and their preferred destination is America, so most of these funds are spent in America. Be that an ordinary technical training or higher education the first choice is again America. If Saudis need minor or major medical treatment on government expenditure, the government would send them to the US while such education, training and treatment facilities of the same quality and standard are available at a much lower cost in other developed or developing countries. Saudi Arabia’s largest company is ‘Aramco’ which is run in the partnership of US. Saudi Arabia’s largest bank is Saudi American bank. Saudi Arabia is the biggest market of American cars and so Saudi streets are full of Cadillac, Caprices, Fords and Lincolns etc. The largest fast food chains of Saudi Arabia are Pizza Hut, Pizza in, Domino Pizza, Burger King, Taco Bell, Chill, KFC, McDonald etc. The most popular selling cosmetic brands are Clinique, MAC, and Estee Lauder CK, DKNY etc. Likewise the most preferred perfumes are Eternity, Obsession, Contradiction, Escape, Truth, etc.

New generation of Saudi Arabia takes pride in wearing DKNY jeans. The Arabs who call non-Arabs ajmi or dumb feel pride in talking with their children in English and that too in concocted American accent. Saudi supermarkets are flooded with edible goods whose being Halal has always been doubtful and debated. Even on bottles of tomato sauce one can find ‘made in USA’ tag. If you take a look at AC boxes you would discover that it is of York, Gibson or Carrier. In markets signboards read like this, shop of American cars, shop of American mattress, shop of American furniture, shop of American vessels, etc. It is considered a symbol of status to pay through American dollar or American Express card. There are three channels of Saudi government among which one is altogether dedicated to broadcast American films and absurd American shows. People all over the world go to America in search of better livelihood, but more than forty thousand Americans are working in Saudi Arabia and getting an average pay of 40-50 thousand riyals per month. Engineers of Indonesia and Malaysia are world famous in their precision and profession but if they come to Saudi Arabia they come as drivers or housemaids as visas for top class engineers are meant for Americans.

When a Bangladeshi, who earns 240 riyals a month, calls his home, the Saudi government charges 4 riyals per unit from that poor but if a 40-50 thousand riyals earner American calls his home he pays less than 1.5 riyals per unit.

After the US attack on Afghanistan a slight decline is felt in import of American products and some Saudi capitalists have transferred their savings from American to European banks but this is too mild a beginning. Some people have started boycotting American products but majority of them are not capable of buying an American car. Yes! They do drink some other soft drink than Pepsi and smoke some other cigarette than Marlboro.

One day I asked a Saudi friend why Saudi people don’t boycott American goods. He said how they could do so. Majority of American companies’ agents are Saudi princes and boycotting them is against the policy of the government. Prince Naif (home minister) also issues royal decree from time to time that boycotting of American products is not in the interest of Saudi economy while royal imams in their Friday sermons would cry ‘it is Sunnah to trade with the Jews and Christians’ loudly.

A proverb is famous in Saudi Arabia: ‘Amriki mian mian’ means anything from America amounts – 100% out of 100%”. During a few years of my stay there I came to understand quite well the lingual, practical and psychological connotations of this proverb.
The Arab rulers have not only accepted political, financial and cultural slavery of west but they are proud of it.

Egyptian extremism sees Salafis attacking Sufi mosques

Sufi leaders have called for government protection and are forming local committees to protect sacred sites under attack

In the aftermath of Egypt’s revolution, many moderate Muslims have expressed anxiety over the influence of the Muslim Brotherhood in the country’s political and social life, while human rights monitors have warned against discrimination and attacks on the Coptic Christian minority.

But something else long feared has happened there as well. According to the authoritative newspaper Al-Masry Al-Youm, 16 historic mosques in Alexandria belonging to Sufi orders have been marked for destruction by Salafis. The newspaper notes that Alexandria has 40 mosques associated with Sufis, and is the headquarters for 36 Sufi groups. Half a million Sufis live in the city, out of a municipal total of four million people.

Aggression against the Sufis in Egypt has included a raid on Alexandria’s most distinguished mosque, named for, and housing, the tomb of the 13th century Sufi, al-Mursi Abu’l Abbas. Born in the then-Muslim city of Murcia in southeastern Spain, al-Mursi emigrated to Alexandria. He was a disciple of and successor to the Sufi sheikh Abu’l Hassan al-Shadhili, founder of the powerful Shadhili Sufi order, which remains influential throughout north Africa, south Asia, the Muslim communities of the Indian Ocean, and Indonesia.

Salafis have alleged that Sufis are agents of the west as well as heretics. The extremists want to take control of Sufi mosques, after they destroy shrines within their precincts. One object of their manoeuvres is the Qaed Ibrahim mosque in Alexandria, which was the site of mass protests, involving thousands of people, co-ordinated with those in Cairo’s Tahrir Square, during the movement against ex-president Hosni Mubarak.

The Alexandrian Sufi leader sheikh Gaber Kasem al-Kholy has said: “Coptic Christians are a main target for those extremists, but we need to speak out about the suffering of the Sufi people. We have a considerable number of followers, and we are willing and able to protect Egypt’s legacy.”

The devastation of Sufi shrines in Alexandria has already led to counter demonstrations in the city. Al-Kholy has announced that local committees would be formed to protect Sufi sites, and has distributed forms soliciting youth to serve as volunteers. He said the Sufis have submitted a memorandum to the Egyptian military enumerating 20 Sufi institutions that had been attacked.

On April 5, according to Al-Masry Al-Youm, Sufi sheikh Mohamed Alaa Abul Azayem, of the Azeemia Sufi order, announced that it would found an “Egyptian Liberation party” to combat both the Muslim Brotherhood and the Salafi fundamentalists if either took power and threatened the Sufis. The political project has also involved members of the National Association for Change, the reformist Ibn Khaldun Center for Development Studies, and the Islamic Popular Leadership Organisation.

In addition, Sufi residents of the Egyptian governorates of al-Minufyia and Aswan have entered complaints with the government’s Ministry of Islamic Endowments and public prosecutors, demanding state protection for Sufi structures, against radical encroachment. Radicals in Al-Minufiya had previously assaulted Coptic citizens. Violation of Sufi rights has also been reported in the al-Buharya governorate.

In the governorate of al-Qalyubiya, two Salafis were arrested at the end of March after a group of their followers razed five local shrines. Fighting broke out with townspeople who gathered to protect the tombs.

Egyptian Sufis have described themselves as “soldiers of God” responsible for the defence of shrines and tombs. A protest against radical violence was called last week by Egypt’s Supreme Council of Sufi Orders, at the Hussein mosque in Cairo, and was joined by a leader of the Shia Muslim minority, Muhammad al-Derini.

माम हरम के भारत आगमन पर उर्दू अखबारों ने काफी कुछ लिखा है। जिस तरह उनका प्रचार-प्रसार किया जा रहा था उस पर चर्चा करते हुए एक अखबार ने लिखा है कि यह सुनामी है। सुनामी गुजर जाने के बाद देखिएगा, कैसे-कैसे दृश्य नजर आते हैं। पेश है इस बाबत उर्दू के कुछ अखबारों की राय।

`इमाम हरम का दौरा देवबंद’ के शीर्षक दैनिक `उर्दू नेट’ में सम्पादक असगर अंसारी ने लिखा है कि मक्का और मदीना की मस्जिद में इमामत के लिए योग्य होना ऐसा ही है जैसा दिल्ली की शाही मस्जिद का मामला है, बाप के बाद बेटा उसके बाद पोता। जिस तरह जामा मस्जिद के शाही इमाम की योग्यता पूर्व इमाम का बेटा होना है उसी तरह मक्का में स्थित हरम का इमाम होना मोहम्मद बिन अब्दुल वहाब के रिश्तेदारों से होना है। सऊदी अरब ने अपने यहां जारी आंदोलन की लहर को टालने के लिए मसलकी रंग दे दिया है और अमेरिका के इशारे पर इस्राइली हितों को संरक्षण देने हेतु बहरीन में सैनिक हस्तक्षेप कर दिया है। दूसरी ओर सऊदी अरब के धार्मिक विभाग के मंत्रालय ने आम मुसलमानों को यह समझाने की जिम्मेदारी दी है कि सऊदी अरब में इस्लाम के अनुसार शरई सरकार है और इसके खिलाफ गतिविधियां इस्लाम के खिलाफ और गैर शरई हैं। सभी इमामों से कहा गया है कि वह आंदोलनकारियों को शिया करार देकर इस्लामी जगत के लिए खतरा करार दें ताकि सुन्नी मुसलमान इस आंदोलन के खिलाफ एकजुट हो जाएं। सऊदी अरब के सामने सबसे बड़ा मिशन यही है और उसके मंत्री, दूत एवं धार्मिक व्यक्ति इस समय दुनियाभर के दौरे पर हैं। शेख अबुर्दुरहमान बिन अब्दुल अजीज असुदैस का दौरा भी इसी सिलसिले की कड़ी मालूम होता है। कांफ्रेंस के लिए विषय का चयन भी ऐसा है जो मुसलमानों में बहरहाल विवादित है।

`और कितना नीचे उतरेंगे अरशद मियां?’ के शीर्षक से वरिष्ठ पत्रकार हफीज नोमानी ने `जदीद’ खबर में लिखा है कि उनके प्रेस में सैयद सालार मसूद गाजी के उर्स का पोस्टर छपवाने एक साहब आते थे। एक बार जब वह आए तो उन्होंने कहा कि इस बार पोस्टर में आधे में मेरा फोटो और तीन इंच की मोटी पट्टी में नाम सहित आधे में उर्स का विवरण और कैलेंडर होगा। इसकी संख्या एक लाख होगी। यह पूछने पर कि इस बार ऐसा अलग क्यों हैं, उन्होंने कहा कि वह चुनाव लड़ना चाहते हैं इसीलिए आधे में फोटो और आधे में कैलेंडर है ताकि लोगों के घर में लगा रहे और सालभर लोग मुझे देखकर याद करते रहें। इस उदाहरण को देने के बाद वह लिखते हैं अगर हमारी बात गलत है तो माफ कर दीजिएगा। हमें बिल्कुल ऐसा लग रहा है कि जैसे हमारे दोस्त सैयद सालार मसूद गाजी की गोद में बैठकर संसद में पहुंचना चाहते हैं। मौलाना अरशद मदनी बिना जरूरत और बिना किसी कारण पैगम्बर मोहम्मद के महान साथियों (सहाबा) को जमीअत उलेमा के लिए इस्ताल कर रहे हैं। दिल्ली में लाख दो लाख मुसलमानों को जमा करके अपनी लोकप्रियता का प्रदर्शन कर राज्यसभा की सदस्यता के लिए रास्ता साफ कर रहे हैं।

`सहाबा की महानता के नाम पर अमेरिकी हितों का संरक्षण’ के तहत डॉ. मुजफ्फर हुसैन गजाली ने `सेकुलर कयादत’ में लिखा है। हिन्दुस्तानी मुसलमान यह महसूस करते हैं कि ऐसे समय में सहाबा की महानता पर कांफ्रेंस करना जबकि मुस्लिम देशों में तानाशाहों के खिलाफ लोकतंत्र के हक में एक जबरदस्त इंकलाब आया हुआ है जिसकी शुरुआत ईरान से हुई थी। इत्तेहाद मिल्लत (मुस्लिम एकता) को नुकसान पहुंचाना है। मुस्लिम दुनिया में जो हालात पैदा हो रहे हैं उनसे ईरान के लिए मुसलमानों में गुंजाइश पैदा हुई है और शिया-सुन्नी करीब आए हैं। अरशद मदनी की सहाबा की महानता कांफ्रेंस मुस्लिम हित की नहीं बल्कि इस्राइल एवं अमेरिका के हित के संरक्षण की कांफ्रेंस है। सऊदी अरब में लोकतांत्रिक सरकार अमेरिका के हित में नहीं है। ऐसा करने से उसकी पकड़ कमजोर पड़ जाएगी। हो सकता है कि मौलाना मिल्ली इत्तेहाद को नुकसान पहुंचाकर इस अवसर का फायदा उठाने की रणनीति के तहत मैदान में उतरे हों। इससे मौलाना के दो मकसद पूरे हो सकते हैं। एक कांग्रेस उन्हें राज्यसभा में भेज दे तो उनकी मंजिल है दूसरे उन्हें आने वाले चुनावों में मुसलमानों का वोट कांग्रेस के हक में डलवाने का ठेका मिल जाए। `हमारा समाज’ में सालिक धामपुरी ने `देखने हम भी पर तमाशा न हुआ’ के शीर्षक से लिखा है। इमाम हरम के हमारे देश में आने की सूचना कारोबारी मकसद से निकलन वाले अखबारात में दीनी व मिल्ली जमाअतों बल्कि हमारे उलेमा की ओर से दिए गए लाखों रुपये के विज्ञापनों से पढ़ने को मिली। इमाम हरम का हमारे देश में आने का मकसद क्या है यह हम नहीं जानते, लेकिन इनके आगमन पर हमारी मिल्ली जमाअतों ने अपनी पब्लिसटी का कोई मौका हाथ से नहीं जाने दिया। 26 मार्च को इमाम हरम को जमाअत इस्लामी हिन्द के मुख्यालय स्थित गुबंद वाली मस्जिद में जोहर की नमाज पढ़ानी थी इसके लिए एक दिन पहले से ही रिक्शे पर ऐलान कराया गया और अखबारों में विज्ञापन दिया गया जिसके कारण भीड़ इतनी हो गई कि वह मस्जिद के अन्दर नहीं जा सके और उन्हें बिना नमाज पढ़ाए ही वापस जाना पड़ा। माना कि भीड़ के कारण वह नमाज नहीं पढ़ा सके लेकिन जमाअत इस्लामी हिन्द कैडर आधारित संगठन होने का दावा करती है। देश की व्यवस्था की तब्दीली की इच्छा रखने वाली जमाअत एक मामूली से कार्यक्रम को कंट्रोल नहीं कर सकी। सुबह से इमाम हरम के जोहर की नमाज अदा कराने का एक मुबारक तमाशे का जो ऐलान हो रहा था, अफसोस कि वह तमाशा न हो सका। `इमाम हरम के दौरे पर सियासी रोटियां सेकने की कोशिश तेज’ के तहत देवबंद से रिजवान सलमानी ने `हमारा समाज’ में लिखा है कि राजनैतिक विशेषज्ञों का मानना है कि केंद्र की यूपीए सरकार विशेषकर प्रधानमंत्री मनमोहन सिंह के अमेरिका की ओर झुकाव से कांग्रेस की मुसलमानों और सेकुलर लोगों में जो छवि बनी है, इमाम हरम के दौरे से इसमें बदलाव आएगा। कांग्रेस और ममता बनर्जी की तृणमूल कांग्रेस ने आगे बढ़कर इस कार्यक्रम में भाग लिया और केंद्रीय स्वास्थ्य मंत्री गुलाम नबी आजाद ने उनके लिए अशोका होटल में भोज दिया। उससे कांग्रेस के इरादे किसी से छिपे नहीं रह सके। विशेषज्ञ यह भी मानते हैं कि गत कुछ समय से उत्तर प्रदेश के मुसलमानों को समाजवादी पार्टी और बहुजन समाज पार्टी से तोड़ने में जीजान से कांग्रेस लगी है। वर्तमान कार्यक्रम को कांग्रेस की इसी नीति का हिस्सा माना जा रहा है।

`इमाम हरम की राजनीति’ के शीर्षक से दैनिक `हमारा समाज’ में ख्वाजा मजनू ने लिखा है। राजधानी वालों के लिए यह सप्ताह काफी मुबारक था। हर तरफ पवित्र हलचल थी। लोग जा-ए-नमाज (जमीन पर बिछाकर नमाज पढ़ने का कपड़ा) लेकर भागते नजर आ रहे थे। जिन्होंने कभी खुदा का घर नहीं देखा वह भी भगवान राम के मैदान सिजदा करने के लिए बेचैन थे। कोई इसे आधा हज का दर्जा दे रहा था तो कोई हज से भी ज्यादा महत्व देने में लगा था। दिल्ली में इमाम साहब कहां जाएंगे और कहां नहीं जाएंगे इसके लिए अन्दर ही अन्दर खूब खींचातानी हुई। आईटीओ स्थित मस्जिद अब्दुल नबी से 24 घंटे कंट्रोलिंग की कोशिश की जा रही थी।

यहां मुंबई के एक साहब हैं, जिन्हें कुछ लोग मोबाइल आफिस भी कहते हैं। वह एक ट्रेवल एजेंट हैं लेकिन छोटे बाबू की सेवा करना अपना कर्तव्य समझते हैं। छोटे बाबू ने वह कर दिखाया जिससे उनके पूर्वज वर्षों से नहीं करना चाहते थे। सऊदी सरकार के खिलाफ अपनी आवाज उठाने के लिए मशहूर इनके पूर्वजों की आत्मा को कितनी तकलीफ हुई होगी जब एक सरकारी इमाम के लिए शेखुल इस्लाम का नारा लगा रहे हों। एक ऐसा व्यक्ति कदमों में एक कर्मचारी के गिर पड़ा हो जिनके पूर्वजों के कदमों में पूरा शासन नतमस्तक हुआ हो और उन्होंने उसे ठोकर मार दी हो। खैर, यह तो समय-समय की बात है। हालात सदैव एक जैसे नहीं रहते और बुद्धिजीवी वही है जो हालात के अनुसार फैसला करे, जो अपनी बरतरी के लिए किसी का कदम चूमें और किसी के दर पर माथा टेके।

Sunni Markaz of Kerala: A Renaissance in the South India

Jamia Markazu Ssaqafathi Ssunniyya is an Islamic university in Kerala, India, operating since 1978. It has roughly 10,000 students studying Qur’an, Hadith, Fiq’h, Arts, Science and Technology under different institutes. .

This Jamia aims to strengthen the moral character of the Muslim society by developing the leadership capacities of Ulama and the Muslim ummah.

Jamia Markazu Ssaqafathi Ssunniyya has been a cultural centre of Kerala since 1978 and although we are one of the major cultural and educational institutions in Kerala, we attract students from various parts of India. There are 10000 students studying Quran, Hadith, Fiq’h, Arts, Science and Technology under different institutes, by which it has been developing to the shape of an Islamic University.

This Jamia’s influence reaches far beyond the walls of communal and social barriers. Its work strengthens the moral character of the Muslim society. By developing the leadership capacities of Ulamas and the Muslim umma.

Jamia Markaz directly affects the cities, towns and even the rural areas where these Ulamas reach. Armed with renewed vigor and Islamic spirit, Markaz students return to the society with anew wholeness, a new sense of responsibility and practical skills to bring about a moral revolution. “Will it also surprise you if I told you that I have read the Bible, the Torah, the Bhagvad Gita, Karl Marx’s The Communist Manifesto and Hitler’s Mein Kampf?”

It was 1991. I’d just quit the University of Karachi and joined a weekly magazine as a feature writer. My office was on the fourth floor in a building on I. I. Chundrigarh Road. I headed down to get myself a pack of cigarettes and a saada-khushbu paan. The moment I stepped out, my way was politely blocked by three young tableeghi jamaat recruits.

“Aslaamulalaikum,” said one of them in a swallowing Arabic accent. “Walaikum,” said I.
“Jinaab,” he said, ever so courteously, “it is time for Asar prayers. Why aren’t you at the mosque?”
“Well, why aren’t you?” I asked.
“We will be, but we are already doing a naik kaam (good deed),” he said.
“I see. What makes you think that I am not doing a naik kaam as well?” I asked, equally politely.
“I’m sure you are,” he said. “Par lagta hai aap namaz kum parh tey hein,” (it seems you do not pray much).
“How do you know that?” I replied, “Kya namaazioon key parr hotay hain?” (Why, do praying people have wings?).
“Janaab, if you don’t want to go to the mosque, why not give some charity to it,” he said, still smiling.
“Charity for a mosque?” said I. “Merey bhai, mosques are all that Zia-ul-Haq ever built in Pakistan. I think you people will please Allah more if you gathered charity for schools and hospitals instead!”
The guy smiled again, “woh tou bohat hain (there are more than enough).
Acha. Yeh kab hooah? (Really? When did that happen?)” I laughed.
He shook his head, smiled, half-closed his eyes and said, “Allah aap ko hidayat dey aur ….”
I interrupted: “… Aur aap ko aqal!”
He didn’t look very pleased, and without shaking my hand, walked away. Not smiling anymore.

It was 1994. I was an assistant editor and columnist for an English daily in Karachi. On a visit to our Lahore office, I took a break to check out a book store at Liberty Market. There I was approached by a kid in his late teens.

“Hello. You are NFP, right?”
“Err… yes.”
“I am Danish.”
“Hello, Danish.”
“I read your stuff,”
“Great.”
“It’s very interesting. Keep it up”
“Thank you, Danish.”
“Okay. Nice meeting you Mr Paracha.”
“Nice meeting you too Danish.”

(Danish turned, paused, and then turned to face me again).
“Mr Paracha?”
“Yes, Mr Danish.”
“Have you read the Quran?”
“Err… yes Danish I have.”
“In English?”
“Yes, Danish, in English.”
“How did it change you?”
“Why Danish, do you think I should change?”
“I was just wondering.”
“I see. Are you surprised that I have read the Quran?”
“Actually, yes.”

Danish was still. Almost expressionless. Then chuckled: “Mr NFP. Always trying to be different.”
“Yes, Danish. And so should you,”
I said, handing him a Batman comic.

It was 2002. I was working as a creative group head at an advertising agency and sitting with the Creative Director who was a woman. A young female employee came into her office and complained that a male colleague of hers, a bearded man in his 30s, was constantly advising her to wear a duppata.

The Creative Director kept her cool, sent the lady back to her seat and called the man.

“Why are you going around saying this to women?” she asked him. He remained quiet.

She continued: “I’m sure a lot of people do not like your beard, but has anyone over here ever told you to shave it off?”

The man was shocked. He looked at me and then at the Creative Director. Then a weepy, squeaky “sorry” appeared from deep down his throat.

“End of jihad,” I thought.

It was 2006. I got a call from an agitated man on my cell. He was angry about a few articles of mine.

“How can you defend France’s laws banning hijabs in public schools?” he asked, agitatedly.

“They’ve banned Sikh turbans and the wearing of Christian crosses and the Jewish Star of David as well,” I told him.

“Yes, but the law is really against the Muslims!” he insisted.

“No,” said I. “The law is against exhibiting overt religious symbols in public. France is a secular country and it has every right to do so. What if a European woman appears in a mini-skirt on Zainab Market? You will say, since you are an Islamic republic, you have the right to ban such attire in public, wouldn’t you. I think they tolerate a lot more hijabs and turbans in their country than we can ever tolerate crosses, shorts and skirts in ours!”

“You are just against Islam!” Saying this, he simply dropped the line.

It was 2007. My apartment building had run out of water. I accompanied the building’s President to check the situation. The President called the chowkidar, saying “Yaar, ever since you have come, we have started to have this water problem.”

The President then turned towards me and in all seriousness announced: “Nadeem sahib, this chowkidar of ours does not pray regularly.”

I nodded.

“You know,” the President continued in all earnest, “the chowkidar we had before him used to pray right here over the water tank and ma’shallah we used to have tons of water!”

“Aab-i-zam-zam?” I asked, jokingly.

But the President remained serious. “This guy should start praying here!”

“Right!” said I, slightly irritated. Then turning towards the embarrassed chowkidar I told him, “You better start praying over the water tank. Who knows, this time we might strike oil!”

Deobandi controversy?

The Deobandis have been in the media for many wrong reasons. The media have now exposed the extremism of both the Wahhabi and Deobandi sects to the wider public. I have listed only some links about the immorality, hypocrisy and deviancy of the Deobandis.

The issue here is not about Muslim or Kafir, Eastern or Western as the reality of Deo’band is not shy of such an introduction and we are well aware of their history. It is the typical excuse by the Deos and their younger cousins the Tableeghis to ridicule reports highlighting their evil schemes as western and kafir. Nevertheless, the terrorist origins of Deos is far from being the issue as far as orthodox Sunni Muslims are concerned. Indeed why bother with “Kafirs” such as Rushdie and others, when the local home-bred dogs amongst the Muslims have barked far worse against the excellence of the Holy Prophet (sallal laho alahai walahai wasalam) and have not only been spared but are hailed as reformers and greater leaders by their ignorant followers.

The Deo Defenders here who are trying to cover up the above report by condemning it to be the words of a “Kafir” should quit being hypocrites for once and embrace the reality of their forefathers. Where were your so-called ideologies when your leaders stood up toe-to-toe and shoulder-to-shoulder with the Hindus hailing slogans in praise of Gandhi and condemning the efforts of Quaid-e-Azam and the Muslim league in the formation of Pakistan as admitted within the contents of their own books.

Next thing, these people are going to allege that some kafir wrote the kufr contained in Molwi Thanvi, Nanothwi, Gangohi and Ambethwi’s books and therefore they are innocent from all charges. Your antics may fool a naïve child who may be unaware of your history but for the rest, we shall ensure your profile of your grotesque crimes against the Muslims and Islam are showcased before the entire world. In summary, the Muslims should do more to ensure people like these are exposed who are not only damaging Islam from within but also burning the bridges with the West and non-Muslims to invite them to embrace and/or appreciate the message of Islam.

One must note that the article does not condemn Muslims in general but rather a particular sect, which we are already familiar follows the deviant ideology of Saudi-origin Wahabism. It is thus little surprise that it also embraces the Saudi terrorist ideology as well, which only up to recent times was targeted at the massacre of Sahih-ul-Aqeedah Muslims in order to flourish Wahabiyat.

The above statistics highlight the picture of Britain to be very similar to that of Pakistan where despite the significantly vast majority of the people being orthodox Sunnis, the country is nevertheless overwhelmed with Deo’bandi madrassas. Saudi and/or terrorist funding may I say? What about western funding? We all know that Molwi Ashraf Ali Thanvi would get Rs.600 per calendar month from the British in his time. This is not a spoof written by a kafir but admitted by Deos themselves within their books. The question then arises, for what?

The only logical explanation being, to induce deviant ideologies amongst the Muslims to lose their love and respect of the Holy Prophet (sallal laho alaihai waalahi wasalam). Once the true spirit of Islam is lost, so is the faith.

Ahmedabad: An intense power struggle is going on between the moderate and the hardline Muslim groups for control of the sizable Sunni population in Gujarat that accounts for nearly 90% of the five million Muslims in the state.
   Since the 2002 Gujarat riots the more radical Deobandis, who are flush with funds, are winning over turf from the moderate Barelvis. Not only more mosques are coming under the control of the Deobandis, but this orthodox school of Islam is also finding ready converts among youth coming from liberal and educated Muslim backgrounds.
   Apart from running madrassas, mainstream educational institutions have been the special focus for the Deobandis. While this power struggle is a pan-India phenomenon, it has assumed serious dimensions in Gujarat in the last six years. Recent clashes between the two groups in Surat, Kalol, Prantij, Himmatnagar and other towns and cities across Gujarat have only underlined this conflict.
   The tolerant Barelvis, who are okay with worship in dargahs, have even put up notice boards outside scores of mosques in Gujarat banning the entry of the Tablighi Jamaat, the missionary wing of the Deoband school of Islam which preaches a puritanical interpretation of Quran.
   The oldest Deobandi madrassa in Gujarat at Dabhel near Surat is over 100 years old and this explains why south Gujarat is supposedly a stronghold of the radicals. While the Deobandis have moved in a big way into other parts of Gujarat, stiff resistance is coming from the Barelvis from Saurashtra.
   Kadar Salot, president of the Rajkot Saher Sunni Muslim Juna Masjid Trust, says: ‘‘The Tablighis want friction in society while people of Rajkot do not want any trouble. This is the reason several mosques in Rajkot have banned their entry.’’ 

   Chairman of Porbandar Markaz-e-AhleSunnat Barkat-e-Raza Dar-ul-Ulum Abdul Sattar Hamdani says, ‘‘to keep Deobandis at a distance, the trustees of the mosques may have resorted to pasting of notices.’’

A meeting organised by the University of Gujrat to discuss the topic of “Resurgence of Sufism as a Universal Movement for Peace and Development” on Friday came to the natural conclusion that mysticism removed barriers of hard faith and led to peace which is the translated meaning of Islam.

However, the same day a TV channel discussed Sufism and found fault with the great mystics of the past in their claims of direct communication with God.

In these days of punishing orthodoxy, the stock of mysticism is low. Anyone inclined to follow the path of our saints can be killed, as shown by the murderous ongoing clashes in the Khyber Agency.

Mysticism is an internal phenomenon which can’t even be expressed but it permeates our culture through poetry.

It loosens the hold of the orthodox clergy and brings people together without their agency in an atmosphere of festivity at the various melas.

The world outside is becoming aware of this trend in Islam and is reaching out to it simply because the orthodox clergy will not communicate except through jihad.

So we should constantly reassert our Sufi heritage and build bridges across faiths.

Ahmad Raza Khan (1856-1921) was a Sunni Muslim scholar and sufi from Bareilly, a city in Northern India. He was a great writer, authoring nearly 1,000 books and monographs of varying lengths in Arabic, Persian and Urdu. He was a follower of Hanafi jurisprudence. His “magnus opus” is his fatawa Ridawiyya which comprised of 40 Volumes.

Ahmad Rida Khan was born in 1272 AH (1856 CE) into a family of Alims (legal scholars). His father, Mawlānā Naqī Áli Khān, was an alim of his time. His mother named him Amman Miyān. He studied Islamic sciences mainly under the tutelage of his father. He undertook the traditional dars-e nizami course under his father’s supervision and thereafter was largely self-taught. He did not proceed to take a formal course at a dar al-ulum.

 Adolescence and start of his ministry

At the age of 14, Ahmad Raza, was given the responsibility of writing Fatawa (written answers to Islamic legal problems). It was through this path of life that he communicated to the masses to be steadfast to mainstream Islam – The Ahle-sunnah wal Jama’at. At this time there were many Pirs (Islamic Holy men) throughout northern India and Kashmir, each with their own dedicated group of followers. Most of these known Pirs and Saintly men were very impressed with the teachings (The Ahle-sunnah wa Jama’at) of Imam Ahmad Raza al-Qaadiri and looked at him as their role model and security against the corrupt cults that emerged within Islam.

 Adulthood

At 21 he received the blessing of one of the most outstanding Pir’s of the area and sent him out to make Sufi’s from anyone worthy. At 22 years of age while on Hajj with his father, he received many honours from some of the Sufi teachers of his time. Hajj was a turning point in his life. It inspired Imam Raza Khan to make followers throughout India and impart his teachings and knowledge on them. During his lifetime he wrote over 1000 books.

Aĥmed raza studied many sciences and fiqh (jurisprudence) particularly in the Hanafi school. He earned many authorizations to teach — by his own affirmation, the most important one was from the Mufti of Makkah, Shaykh Ábd ar-Raĥmān as-Sirāj ibn Ábdullāh as-Sirāj. This chain of transmission is claimed to reach back to Abu Hanifah.

Aĥmed Raza Khan took the Qadiri path and was initiated in that Sufi order by the Noble Sufi Master, Sayyid Khatimul-Akaabir Sha Ale-Rasul Ahmadi al-Husaini al-Qaadiri Barkaati of Mārahra (a town in northern India). He dedicated many tracts to the love of [[Aaqa Salal Laho Alaihe-wasalam], as is evident in his writings and endeavors.

In 1904 he founded a school, the Madrasa Manzar al-Islam. The position of chief administrator of this school was later to become a hereditary one within the Riza family for the next four generations. Raza died in 1340 AH (1921 CE), at the age of 65.

Authorization

He had many ijazahs (certificate of authority, authorization) in Hanafi fiqh including one from the Muftī of Makkah, Shaykh abd ar-Rahmān as-Siraj ibn Abdullāh as-Siraj (The Master of the Kaba or place of hajj). This chain of transmission reaches Imām Abū Hanifah in twenty seven links and in further four to Aaqa Salal Laho Alaihe-wasalam.

He took the Qadiri path and was initiated in that Sufi order by Allama Sayyid Shah Aale Rasool Hussaini Qadri Barkati Al-Hanafi ( Student of Allama Abdul Aziz Mohaddith e Dehalwi Al-Hanafi ) of Mārahra (a town in northern India) when he turned 21 years of age. He was a great lover of the Prophet Muhammad as is evident in his writings and endeavors. He was also a great poet who has to his name many and verses in Arabic, Persian and Urdu. The anthology of his Urdu and Persian verse is presented in a slim volume with two parts and named: ‘Hadayiq e Bakh’shish’ meaning ‘Gardens of Salvation’.

His works

Ahmed Raza was the author of nearly 1,000 books[citation needed] and monographs of varying lengths, as well as poetry, in Arabic, Persian and Urdu. Amongst the most well-known are the following:

  1. Kanzul Iman Fi Tarjamatu’l Qu’ran (The Treasure of Faith: A translation of the Quran) – This is his Urdu translation of the Quran. It combines fluency of language with Quranic exegesis and is an explanatory translation, as opposed to a literal one.
  2. Ĥadāyiq e Bakh’shish (Gardens of Salvation) – This is his slim two-volume anthology of Urdu and Persian poetry, eulogizing the Prophet Muhammad Peace Be Upon Him.
  3. Al- Átāyā an-Nabawiyyah fi’l Fatāwā ar-RiĎawiyyah (also known as Fatāwa ar-RiDawiyyah or Fatāwā Razwiyah) – His magnum opus, this is a collection of books, monographs and edicts on all aspects of Hanafī fiqh. The latest edition runs into 24 large volumes.
  4. Al-Dawlatul Makkiyah (The Meccan Treasure) – This is amongst his masterpieces and was written in a few days. It discusses, in great detail, the Prophet’s Knowledge of the Unseen ( ‘ilm al ghayb), one of the contentious issues between the Brailwees (ahlus sunnah wal jama’ah) and their opponents, notably the Deobandis.
  5. Husamul Haramain[1]

He also made several poems about Aaqa Salal Laho Alaihe-wasalam such as Lam Yati Nadhiruka Fi Nadharin (in Arabic Urdu, Hindi, and in Persian) and Zamin-o-Zaman which can be found in Ĥadāyiq e Bakh’shish.

Branches of Knowledge

It is found that Ahmad Raza had proficiency in more than fifty branches of knowledge Arab scholars like Shaykh Ismail bin Khalil & Shaykh Musa Ali Shami while commenting on his reputation and his knowledge, Dr. Jamil Jalibi, Vice Chancellor, Karachi University (Pakistan) said:

“Mawlana Ahmed Raza Khan Barelvi was a Jurist, scholar, Naa’tia poet, an observer of Islam. His crowning scholarship can be imagined by the fact that he had knowledge of various sciences and humanities. He left behind more than a hundred booklets.”

Once, Sir Zia al-Din, a famous mathematician, was in a predicament with regards to part of his research in a mathematical field which meant he had to go to Berlin (Germany) to seek a solution to an intricate problem. It so happened that a certain Mawlana from the famous Aligarh University advised Sir Zia al-Din to visit Ahmad Raza to seek a solution for his mathematical problem. But, Sir Zia al-Din, not sounding very confident said, “What will an ordinary Mawlana like Mawlana Ahmed Raza be able to solve? He hasn’t even gone out of his city to gain knowledge, so it is obvious that his knowledge is very limited.” Nevertheless, after some convincing, he agreed to visit Bareily.

When he arrived in Bareily , he immediately went to Ahmad Raza. Presenting the intricate mathematical problem to Ahmad Raza he said, “I am now going to Germany. I will come back for the answer, that is, if you do manage to solve it.” As he was speaking, Ahmad Raza was busy writing and listening to him at the same time. As Sir Zia al-Din was about to leave, he handed him a sheet of paper. When Sir Zia al-Din read what was written on this paper, he realised that it contained the solution to his mathematical problem that had him so confused. Sir Zia’ al-Din, was later recorded to have said the following about Ahmad Raza:

“He was an un-assuming man of pleasant manners and morals, had deep insight in mathematics, although he was not formally educated by a teacher. It was an inner gifted inherent knowledge. My query pertained to a theory of knotting problems of mathematics, but his manner and explanation was spontaneous as if he had already carried out a research in it. Now, there is nobody so well-versed in India. Such a scholar, I think, there is none. Allah has bestowed upon him such a knowledge, that is amazing. His insight in the fields of mathematics, euclid, algebra and timings is astonishing. A mathematical problem that I could not solve despite my best of efforts, this learned man explained in a few moments.”

He was so much effected by Ahmad Raza that he became a true Muslim with a beard on his face.[dubious ] .

Intellectual Life

Imam Aĥmed Razaā’s spiritual and religious involvements seemingly encompassed his life. However, he was also a self-taught scientist in many fields and a mathematician. He acted upon his sincere belief of the Quran and Hadith mentioning that Islam and science are intertwined within each other. He wrote several treatises on several scientific fields. [2].

 Secularism

During the period of the Indian Khilafat Movement, Gandhi was advised that he should meet with Aĥmed Riđā. When he was told that the Gandhi wished to meet and speak to him, Aĥmed Riđā said, “What would he speak about? Religion or worldly affairs? If it is worldly affairs, what can I partake in, for I have abstained from the world and have no interest in it.” (Al Mizaan, p. 335)

01. Nothing with photos of living objects should be near me when my Ruh (Soul) leaves.
02. Recite Sura Yaseen and Sura Ra’ad beside me.
03. Recite Durood in abundance.
04. Keep those who are weeping away from me.
05. Give my Ghusl according to the Sunnah.
06. Either Mawlana Haamid Raza or Allamah Amjad Ali should perform my Janaza Salaah. (radi Allahu anhum)
07. Do not delay my Janazah.
08. When taking my Janazah, recite “Kaabe ke Badru Duja”.
09. Do not read anything in my praise.
10. Place me softly in the grave.
11. My grave should be dug according to my height.
12. My Kafan should be according to the Sunnah.
13. The food of my Fatiha must be given to the poor.
14. Haamid Raza must give a fair share of everything to Chothe Mia (Huzoor Mufti Azam Hind). If not, my Rooh will be displeased. (radi Allahu anhum)
15. All of you must remain steadfast on my Deen. Do not leave the path of Shariah. Stay on the Deen on which I was.

Towards Mirza Ghulam Ahmad

Mirza Ghulam Ahmad of Qadian, claimed to be the promised Messiah and Mahdi awaited by the Muslims. These claims proved to be extremely controversial among Muslims and he was branded as a heretic and apostate by many religious scholars of the time, including Ahmed Rida. To prove his point, when Ahmed Rida visited Mecca and Madina for pilgrimage in 1905, he prepared a draft document entitled “AlMotamad AlMustanad” (The Reliable Proofs) for presentation to the eminent scholars of Mecca and Madina-E-Pak. Ahmed Raza collected opinions of the Ulama of Hejaz and compiled them in a compendium written in Arabic language with the title, Husam al Harmain (The Sword of two sanctuaries), a work containing the thirty-three Ulamas’ thirty -four verdicts (20 Meccan and 13 Medinese Ulama). The overall import of this work was that Ghulam Ahmad’s beliefs were blasphemous and tantamount to apostasy.[3].

Dargahs Of India: Sirhind Sharif

Dotting GT Road, away from the hustle and bustle of Chandigarh and somewhere between Ludhiana and Ambala, lies the dusty town of Sirhind that holds within itself important pages of Indian history book. Sirhind is mostly known among Muslims through Sheikh Ahmed Sirhindi, the famous Sufi of the Naqshbandi order who was conferred the title of Mujaddid Alif-sani.

Mujaddid, in Islamic tradition, refers to a person who, Muslims believe, is sent by God in the first half of every century of the Islamic calendar.

As it says in the hadith: “Allah shall raise for this Umma at the head of every century a man who shall renew (or revive) for it its religion” (Sunan Abu Dawud)

The Mujaddid’s objective is to revive Islam, remove from it any extraneous elements and to restore it to its pristine state. A Mujaddid might be a caliph, a founder of a sufi order, a saint (wali), a prominent teacher, a scholar or some other kind of influential person.Usually all those who are considered to be the Mujaddid may not compulsory that they claim. Mujaddid Alif-sani would mean reviver of Islam in the second millennium. Even though his name was familiar, I never knew the exact location of Sirhind till a friend I was visiting in Chandigarh told me about it. It was the place where Ahmed al-Faruqi was born on the day of Ashura, the 10th of Muharram in the year 971 Hijri or 1564 AD.

He received his knowledge and education through his father and through many shaikhs in his time. He made progress in three tariqats: Suhrawardiyya, Qadiriyya, and Chistiyya. He was given permission to train followers in all three tariqats at the age of 17 years. He was busy in spreading the teachings of these tariqats and in guiding his followers, yet he felt that something was missing in himself and he was continuously searching for it. He felt an interest in the Naqshbandi Sufi Order, because he could see by means of the secrets of the other three tariqats that it was the best and highest. His spiritual progress eventually brought him to the presence of the Ghawth and Qutb of his time, ash-Shaikh Muhammad al-Baqi, who had been sent from Samarqand to India by the order of his shaikh, Muhammad al-Amkanaki. He took the Naqshbandi Order from the shaikh and stayed with him for two months and some days, until Sayyidina Muhammad al-Baqi opened to his heart the secret of this tariqat and gave him authorization to train his murids in the Order. A high point of Sheikh Ahmed Sirhindi’s life was his confrontation with Akbar and then with his successor Jahangir. Things came to such a pass that he was incarcerated in the Fort of Gwalior for three years. Eventually, he was freed by the Emperor and went back to preaching in Sirhind where he died in 1624 AD. He is largely credited to have led the revival of Islam in India in the 16th-17th century. However, some scholars have criticized his role saying that he steered the intellectual discourse away from the liberal dogma during the times of Akbar and Jahangir. Others have criticized him for his alleged role in the assassination of Guru Arjan Dev, the fifth Guru of Sikhism, in 1606 at the hands of Jahangir who suspected Arjan Dev of helping his rebellious son, Khusrau.

The entrance to his shrine is imposing and a mosque is situated adjacent to the shrine. The plaque at the top of the main gate reads:

bismillah ar rahmaan ar rahiim
laa ilaahaa illalaah muhammad rasuul allah

It roughly translates into:

In the name of Allah, Most Magnificent, Most Merciful
There is no God but Allah and Mohammad is His Messenger

The plaque also tells us that the construction was done in 1925 AD which is not is fairly recent. As it is the case with Taj Mahal the mausoleum of Sheikh Ahmed Sarhind is also built in two stories. A demo grave at the top and the actual grave at the bottom.

WishesOne of the interesting sights at the mausoleum is this intricate marble work made colorful by wish-threads tied by the devotees. For every wish they solicit through Sheikh, the devotees tie a thread. Today Sirhind Sharif receives many of its visitors from other parts of North India who are going to Ajmer Sharif for the annual Urs and stop at Sirhind along the way. The population of Muslims is minuscule in Punjab and a large percentage consists of immigrant workers from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.

Quite close to the dargah of Sheikh Ahmed Sirhindi stands Fatehgarh Sahib Gurudwara and holds an exalted status in the eyes of Sikhs. It is the place where the two younger sons of Guru Gobind Singh were bricked alive.

After the heroic death of two elder sons of Guru Gobind Singh, in the battle of Chamkaur, on December22, 1704 his two younger sons, namely, Zorawar Singh and Fateh Singh were done to death, by being bricked alive in the fort of Sirhind on December 28, 1704 by the order of the tyrant Nawab Wazir Khan. Mata Gujri, grandmother of the two Sahibzadas expired due to the shock of brutal murder of her two grand children. A Hindu Philanthropist Dewan Todar Mal cremated three dead bodies with the help of other devotees of the Guru. He purchased the land by paying gold coins to the muslim Zamindar named Atta. Here stands the Gurdwara Jyoti Swarup. A big hall with a seating capacity for 5,000 persons has been recently constructed. It has been named Dewan Todar Mal Hall. [All About Sikhs]

Sirhind, like many other places of historical importance dotting North Indian landscape has been largely forgotten but will feature prominently whenever we look back into the past.
